The neck makes the difference

The SL-233 has a separate neck section with 4 nodes that you can raise or lower, so it kneads your neck and the top of your shoulders while the back nodes work on your spine. Snailax says it fits users about 5'3" to 5'11". You can also switch between shiatsu (kneading) and rolling along the spine and adjust the roller width.

The SL-256 has no neck section. Its 4 nodes travel the length of your back, and Snailax says they flex up to 3 mm to follow your back's curves.

Seat and comfort

Both have vibration in the seat for the hips and thighs. The SL-256 offers 3 vibration levels and Snailax notes the seat isn't heated. The SL-233 has 2 vibration levels. Both come with a detachable flap to soften the massage if it feels too strong.

Before you buy either

  • Keep the box: returns within 30 days need the original packaging, and Snailax's return pages disagree on who pays return shipping for change-of-mind returns. Confirm with support.
  • Register within 30 days for a 2-year warranty instead of 1 year.
  • Safety: keep sessions to about 15–20 minutes, and ask a doctor first if you have a medical condition, are pregnant or have an implant.
  • Shipping: free in the 48 contiguous US states (3–7 business days).

The bottom line

The SL-256 is the better buy if you just want a heated back massage on your office chair or sofa. The SL-233 is worth the extra $80 if your neck and shoulders need it too, as long as you're roughly 5'3"–5'11". Frequently asked questions

Does the Snailax SL-256 massage the neck?
No. The SL-256's nodes cover the back (upper, lower or full). Snailax mentions relief around the shoulder area, but it has no separate neck nodes. For the neck, choose the SL-233, or pair the SL-256 with the $59.99 SL-632 neck massager.
Will the SL-233 neck nodes fit me?
Snailax says the height-adjustable neck rollers fit users from about 5'3" to 5'11". If you're much shorter or taller, the neck nodes may not line up with your shoulders.
What does the app-control version add?
Both models come in an "APP Control" version for $10 more ($129.99 and $209.99), which lets you run the massager from Snailax's phone app.
Is the massage too strong?
Both have a detachable flap to soften the massage. Snailax also suggests putting a towel or blanket between you and the SL-256 if it still feels too strong, and keeping sessions to about 15–20 minutes.
